Hancock Health Foundation Supports Infant Mortality Reduction

Hancock County, Miss. May 11, 2023 - The Hancock Health Foundation is proud to announce its support for infant mortality rate reduction through the Mississippi State Department of Health.

The first project is to announce that we’ve partnered with Rotary of Central Hancock County the Mississippi SIDS & Infant Safety Alliance to place a safe sleeping billboard on Highway 90 near Dunbar Ave. It contains the “ABCS of Safe Sleep: Alone, on their Backs, in a Crib, in a Smoke-free environment.”

The Foundation is also using its platform to support the Count the Kicks Campaign, which aims to reduce stillbirths and infant mortality rates by educating expectant mothers about the importance of monitoring fetal movement during the third trimester of pregnancy.By doing so, mothers can help identify potential problems early on and receive timely medical intervention if necessary.

Count the Kicks has also launched a web and mobile app for easy tracking.  It is available for free on iOS and Android.  There is also a web app available at http://countthekicks.org.

“Mississippi has the highest infant mortality rate in the country, and we are proud to do our part in reducing it through outreach and education,” said Sherry Ponder, President of the Hancock Health Foundation. “There are many simple yet effective things families can do to reduce their risk. We hope that spreading this message will lead families to make small changes that could make a big difference to their baby’s health and safety."
